Changing Your cPanel Password Regularly
Anyone that has ever had any of their websites hacked will understand the frustration and headache that it causes but even for those that have never had to go through it, you can still understand the annoyance of this when it does happen.
As the saying goes “prevention is better than the cure” and if you can do anything to prevent your websites from being hacked then you should.
One of the easiest things that you can do is to change your cPanel password regularly, or if you’re using a different control panel then change the password for that.
You could change it every month or maybe every two months, making sure to keep a note of your new password each time that you change it.
If you find that you need to give access to cPanel to someone else quite regularly, it may be a good idea to keep changing the password, as long as you make sure that you update the person with the new password whenever you might need them to be able to login.
Sometimes you might have a developer working for you and for various reasons you need to allow them control panel and ftp access, unless it’s for someone within a company or someone that you really trust then it’s not unreasonable to regularly change the password, making sure that the other person can only login when you really want and need them to.
If there does need to be more than one person with the cPanel password, ie anyone other than yourself, then only give it out to who really needs it.
If you are part of a group of people who work together as a business or organisation then you might think that it’s ok to give access to the rest of the group, there may be no danger of anyone in the group wanting to sabotage anything, but what if one of them decides to login, just to look around and accidentally deletes or edits something.
Changing the cPanel password regularly will go some way to helping to protect your websites hosted at that particular account, it cant guarantee their security, as of course there are various ways to do damage to websites but it’s a start and because it only takes a moment to do, it’s worth it.
To change the main cPanel password you just need to login and click on the Change Password text or icon which can be found under the preferences header, when you see the change password text fields you just enter your existing password in the old password text field and then enter what you would like your new password to be in the new password text field, then enter the new password again underneath and then click change your password now.
When entering a new password, try to make it difficult for anyone to guess, and definately dont choose a password that you already use to login to any other websites, you should make all of your passwords unique.
Afterwards you should try logging in with the new password to check that everything is ok and working.
Take your time throughout this whole process, making sure that you know your new password and can remember it in order to be able to login again.
It is also easy to backup and transfer all your websites from one server to another server if you have cPanel installed:*,
