Closeness To Server And Speed Differences
When choosing web hosting, the location of the server where your website will be hosted can make all the difference to the speed that you will be able to achieve when you upload and download files by ftp to your account.
For example i have a UK hosting account and the servers from the company that i use are located in London, im located in Birmingham, which is about 100 miles away and i notice quite a difference in how quickly files upload and download through ftp.
Compared to my other hosting accounts that i have, that are with US hosting providers.
It can be handy to have good fast transfer speeds, for example when im upgrading my wordpress blogs manually to the latest version its very fast and done quicker than the blogs that are hosted on US servers at my other accounts.
And downloading my database and home directory backups through cPanel is much quicker too at the UK account.
This is all down to being closer to the server and at first i used to think that people were joking when i would hear people mention this a few years ago, i thought to myself surely just being closer to the server cant mean better transfer speeds to and from your account, but it can indeed.
Obviously if you have a very limited transfer speed from your ISP or the web hosting provider that you are with is very slow and with many problems then you may not see any benefit from your location being close to the hosts servers, but in cases where you have plenty of speed from your ISP and the hosting provider is a good one you will definately benefit from being closer to the servers.
This is no reason to choose a web hosting company though, you may not require a hosting provider to be in the same country as you, but if you are situated in the same country as the hosting provider its quite a noticeable difference in speed that you will see.
