Keeping The Default Email Account Clean
Recently i was downloading a Home Directory Backup from cPanel and before the download completed, my antivirus software detected a trojan, so i cancelled the download and went into my website’s individual email accounts to delete any spam that may have an attachment.
After completing that, i again began downloading a home directory backup and again i had to cancel the download as it was still showing a trojan within the backup, so i went into each email account and went into the trash box of each to make sure they were all empty, i noticed in one that i had not emptied the trash emails and one had an attachment so i thought great, ive got it.
Third time now trying to download a home directory backup, the download nears the end and yet again my antivirus throws up the same trojan warning so i decided to wait till the next morning to get this sorted as it was getting late and i didn’t bother trying to take another backup.
The next morning while feeling a bit more refreshed i came to the realization that i had never logged into the Default Email Account at this particular hosting account, so i did, there was a few megabytes of emails sitting there, the ones that dont get routed to the individual accounts setup.
There were thousands of spam and allsorts in there and so i went and deleted all of that junk, then tried to download a home directory backup, this time success, yipee
thats obviously where the trojan was sitting, in an email attachment within the default email account.
I now make a point of clearing out the junk that goes to that default account regularly, i should have been keeping it clean in the first place but it was simply an area within the email section of cPanel that i never looked at.
So no more trojans attached to an email, clean home directory backups and a few megabytes of space freed up.
