Number Of Hosted Sites And Demands On Server Resources
Quite often il read a question where someone is asking how many websites they can host on an account, quite often they will be using shared hosting but this question is also asked by people using VPS and dedicated servers too.
What you have to take into account is not so much the number of websites that you can host but how demanding each or any of those websites may be on server resoures.
You could be hosting 20 or 30 websites at one account, but they may be small sites, not getting heavy traffic and not really putting much of a demand on the CPU for example.
Or you could have 10 small, not demanding sites on one account and an 11th website that is really demanding, really heavy on CPU and memory resources, getting through a lot of bandwidth and using up a fair amount of disk space too.
While the bandwidth and disk space usage will not be so much of an issue, its the CPU mostly and memory usage that will bring it to the attention of the hosting provider, especially if you’re on shared hosting, but even if on a VPS too.
Another example is that you may have only one site hosted at your account, but again if that one site is very demanding on the server then its going to influence whether or not the provider allows you to stay on the server, or yourself looking around for another package because you are needing more server resources available to you.
Some website scripts can be resource heavy, the type of content that you’re hosting can be heavy, and other factors can influence demands on a server.
So at the end of the day its really down to what types of sites you are running and the type of strain that they may put on a server.
You may get away with literally dozens of websites hosted at one account or you may have to settle for a hosting account only having one of your websites on that account because anything more than that may max out what is available to you.
