You need unbiased information, sometimes people find themselves recommending a company because everyone else is and because this can appear to be helpful for the person asking for advice and seems like it will be saving them a lot of time researching, they end up choosing a web host because a dozen people all said the same on a forum, blog or some other website.

You need to collect opinions from different places though, then you can bring this together and see what real customers are truely saying.

This can give you a much more realistic idea of what you may be able to expect and actually receive from a web host with regards to service, support, uptime and everything else that is expected from a web hosting provider.
