Take Webhost Precautions with Friends and Freelancers

During your time running websites and using web hosting services you may need to hire freelancers for various tasks or may even use a close online friend to do a job or two for you related to your website, for example maybe a bit of coding work or fixing something that has recently gone wrong on your website and often this will result in giving access to the person so that they can work on your website.

Of course if there is any way that you can avoid giving them access then this is better but in the instances that you cant avoid this and must give temporary access you are taking a risk as that person then has access to your other files.

If you are hosting a number of websites on your account then there should be no reason to give such access that the person can go into the files of all of your websites, what you should do is only setup a temporary login for that person so that they only can login to the one particular directory for the website that you have requested for them to work on.

If at all possible try and use the skills of someone that you know well, i mean well enough to have a reasonable amount of trust with, but to be safe i would recommend backing up all of your files before granting access to your folders and as soon as the person has confirmed their completion of the job make sure you disable and delete any login settings that you created.

If something goes wrong you cant really blame your web hosting service for this so this is indeed one of those times when you need to be careful, it is also a good idea to go into your folders afterwards and look for any files or anything that shouldn’t be there, if you spot something that doesn’t look quite right then ask the person who did the job what something is for, if they can give you an explanation in full and everything seems ok then that is better then just ignoring it and risking the security of your website on the server and possibly other peoples websites who may be sharing the same server, for example with shared web hosting.

Your website files are your property and in many cases your business and income so make sure that you protect them in anyway that you can.
