With VPS web hosting you will often see specifications on web hosting websites like Guaranteed RAM and Burstable RAM and may be wondering what this means.
Well when you see Guaranteed RAM it means that with the plan that you choose that you will have a guaranteed amount, so for example you may have Guaranteed RAM of 256MB, so you know that this is pretty much yours to use, but should your website/s receieve a bit of a spike then you can safely use the Burstable RAM, you dont have to do anything specific to use the Burstable RAM, it will be setup that way, and an example of available Burstable RAM could be 1GB.
Its not uncommon for a website to get a bit of a spike of activity and so the Burstable RAM helps your website deal with this, but at the web host that you choose, they most likely would not allow your website/s to go into the Burstable RAM and be using it constantly.
If your website/s hosted on the VPS server are beginning to use the resources more heavily and constantly then the web host would probably contact you suggesting that you upgrade to the next level VPS plan that they may offer or to a dedicated hosting plan if they offer that.
The Burstable RAM is sort of like a safety net to deal with a sudden overflow of resource use that is more than your Guaranteed RAM, just as long as you dont constantly eat into it then its fine to temporarily have your websites use beyond your Guaranteed RAM amount specified.
The use of the Burstable RAM will depend on the availability of resources on the server that your VPS account is on, as a number of VPS servers will be sharing one box, so as long as its available on the server then its there for you to temporarily use.
- Guaranteed RAM - Yours to use, usually less the amount of Burstable RAM.
- Burstable RAM - Available to you for short bursts.

Downtownhost offer a variety of web hosting options with one of them being shared web hosting, they have three different plans called, Shared Bronze, Shared Silver and Shared Gold.
Shared Bronze offers: 5GB of disk space which is a decent amount of storage space and a lot of customers most likely wouldn't run out of space too soon with that, and available bandwidth is 100GB, which is very decent per month, you can host unlimited domains so using the plan for hosting of multiple websites is fine with addon domains.
Also the email accounts available to use are unlimited so you can create individual email accounts for each domain added if you choose to use the plan for more than one website.
24/7 Live support is available and a 30 day money back guarantee is in place.
The Shared Bronze plan is $15.95 if your paying monthly but you can pay for 3 months (quarterly) or 6 months (semi-annually) and save money with the available discounts, you can also purchase 1, 2 or 3 years hosting with savings on each term and the price becoming only $4.95 if you dedicate yourself to 3 years with them.
The Shared Silver plan is much as with the Bronze plan, but with increased disk space, 7GB and more available bandwidth, 250GB bandwidth, the price is $17.95 per month and $6.95 if you dedicate yourself to 3 years on the Shared Silver plan.
The Shared Gold plan again is with the same features as the Bronze plan but with even more disk space, 15GB of disk space and 300GB of bandwidth, the price is $25.95 for one month and if you commit to 3 years its $12.95 per month.
All 3 packages come with cPanel and 23 languages are supported with this control panel, various email features and software and scripts support, as well as other additional features like unlimited MySQL databases and an option for a dedicated static IP address on a monthly basis for an additional $2.
The above shared hosting plans are on linux servers (CentOS Linux)
