Sharing A Server With Undesirable Websites

As you will know if you have looked into various different hosting providers while looking for a suitable one, that some allow adult content and other types of sites and content that are not accepted by other hosting providers.

This doesn't make the hosting company shady, sleazy or guilty of breaking any laws, especially if the content is hosted on servers where it is legal and where viewing some types of content is perfectly legal.

When you see that a hosting provider allows adult content and sites, even though none of your own sites or clients sites will be of an adult nature you might not even think twice about it, i know that i didn't at first.

But when you look into what types of sites that you're sharing a server with you begin to realise that you may actually be sharing a server with some of those adult sites if you are using shared hosting and most likely you are sharing the same IP too.

One way that you can see what other websites that you're sharing a server with is to do a Reverse IP Lookup you just enter one of the URL's of one of your own websites hosted or enter the IP address of your hosting if you know that, click check and give it a moment to check, it can take up to a few minutes if there is a lot of sites to check.

It will show you the total amount of domains hosted on that server, sometimes this can shock you when you see just how many other domains are there from other peoples hosting accounts, but also it will show any adult and porn URL's in red and it even hints at the fact that they may be damaging to you by the fact that your websites are sharing the same IP.

I did this recently and saw that there were many dead sites, parked domains, some adult sites, some offensive URL's, poor quality looking websites and some spammy looking ones too, all sharing the server and the amount hosted on the server is quite high too

Once you have performed this check it gets you thinking, you begin to ask yourself if you want to keep your site(s) hosted on that server, its up to you to look into the other sites sharing the server with you and from there you can then make a decision and consider moving to a different server at the same host or possibly a different webhost altogether.

Obviously a web hosting provider may not fulfil your request to be moved to a different shared server and it may be a case that all of their shared servers are in a similar state, in which case you're better off moving to a different web host anyway if all that you will need is still just shared web hosting.

Now you may ask yourself well how will you know what the shared servers are like at a different webhost that you are considering moving to, well you could ask around or look around to find some websites already on shared servers at a potential replacement for you and perform the same Reverse IP Lookup.

You may be pleasantly suprised and see that not only are the types of websites hosted there of higher quality and not involved in anything negative but there may also be a lot less websites hosted at the server, basically you need to do this check for a few of the shared servers if you want to get a rough idea.

Possibly even contact the webhost and ask for a few example URL's of sites that are hosted on various shared servers of theirs, after all its only fair that you get to see roughly how they control quality and its not like you're spying but rather just needing to know if its worth the move to them.

If you only need shared web hosting then dont think that you need to move to VPS or a Dedicated Server, this is not necessary in order to get off of a messy shared server, you just need to find a web hosting provider that doesn't allow adult content and similar types and that doesn't have allsorts of nasty domains and spammy types of sites that you could potentially be sharing a server with.

In life, its good to share, well most of the time, obviously sometimes it's not, and when it comes to shared servers and dodgy websites then this is one of those situations where sharing with them is best avoided.
